samenvatting: GSN speaks to two gay men in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to learn their stories as the first hints of a positive discussion of LGBT issues starts in the country. The UAE follows the Sharia law as the guideline of life for its citizens and people and in the Sharia law, homosexuality is taboo. Therefore, members of the LGBT in the UAE if spotted by four eyewitnesses performing homosexual acts become subject to flogging, hormonal treatments that usually lead to death, imprisonment or in extreme cases a death sentence.

samenvatting: Investigation report of the censorship of LGBTIQ websites and its impact on LGBTIQ individuals and communities. This report presents six case studies featuring Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The objective of the research was to document which LGBTIQ websites are blocked in each of the six selected countries, to determine how local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) implement blocking, and to investigate how website censorship impacts LGBTIQ communities and their movements to secure justice and equality. Researchers used a range of research methods including a network measurement platform and inter views with those directly impacted by website censorship. The findings illustrate how website censorship significantly obstructs free expres sion of LGBTIQ people and works in synergy with other restrictions to constrain civil liber ties, such as the right to access information, and to curtail the development of human rights movements.

samenvatting: Countries in the Middle East and North Africa lack any legislative framework to allow legal gender recognition (LGR) for their transgender populations. This legislative vacuum has forced transgender people who wish to receive LGR to undergo a lengthy, costly, and complicated judicial review process, where results are not always positive. Judges rely on outdated medical practices, selective readings of Islamic Shari'a, their interpretations of national law, as well as their socio-religious bias on the matter. Thus, judicial rulings often change from one judge to another and sometimes conflict with one another. This essay will examine judicial opinions in Lebanon, Egypt, Kuwait, and the UAE on LGR, focusing on the reasoning of the judges in these cases as well as the role of medical and religious authorities, to map out how legal verdicts on the oft-overlooked issue of LGR came to be in these countries.
